Watermelon: Properties And Benefits

Watermelon, ( Citrullus vulgaris ), is one of the typical fruits of the summer season. Its red-pinkish color, its sweet taste and its large size are very characteristic at first glance, but what undoubtedly concerns us directly are the benefits it can bring us.

In the first instance, this fruit refreshes us to a great extent, since it has a high water content. Therefore, it is very convenient to stay hydrated. On the other hand, it is considered that it can help combat fluid retention, thanks to its diuretic effect.

Hydration and diet, better with watermelon

According to data from the Spanish Nutrition Foundation, watermelon is 95% water, which makes it a natural diuretic. For this reason, according to some popular beliefs, it could be beneficial for those who suffer from kidney problems or have urinary tract disease; however, it cannot replace medical treatment or professional consultation for any symptoms.

Ideal for dieting

In addition to its high water content, it obviously has fiber, which makes this fruit satiate our appetite and hydrate us, in a healthy way. Therefore, it is worth taking advantage of it as a source of hydration on the hottest days of the year.

Since it does not provide calories, this fruit is often included in weight loss plans. However, it must be clarified that the fact that it is included does not mean that it is used as the only food or as a substitute for several food groups.

Despite its sweet taste, watermelon has very few calories (20 per 100 grams). Also several vitamins and minerals, among which the high potassium index stands out.

Like other fruits, Nutrition experts recommend consuming it at any time of the day, within a balanced diet. It can be part of breakfast or a snack, but the important thing is to always include it in a balanced way.

It is also important to clarify that although it has a sweet taste, this fruit only provides intrinsic sugars, so it will not harm the body. As Dr. Manuel Viso explains in his videos and tweets: fruit can always be consumed, but within a healthy, varied and balanced diet.

Like tomato, it also contains lycopene

Watermelon has as a component an  antioxidant called lycopene, which is also present in tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables.

Regarding lycopene, it should be noted that the influence of this component on these last two health problems is still being investigated.

Healthy habits

The rind of the watermelon, especially in its whitish part, has citrulline. This is an active principle with effects that enhance virility, according to a study by the University of Texas, USA, carried out on animals.

This citrulline, once found in the body, is transformed into arginine, an amino acid that contributes to the health of the circulatory system, by helping to increase the elasticity of the walls and arteries.

To consider

If you want to lose weight, it is recommended that you consult your doctor or a dietitian, since these are the most suitable professionals to give advice and guidelines, depending on your case.
