How Many Bridesmaids And Groomsmen Do You Need?

An essential figure when you get married are the groomsmen, who assist the bride and groom throughout the ceremony.

The groomsmen are not only in charge of accompanying the bride and groom. Their function goes much further, that is why they are always chosen from the close circle of the bride and groom. Sponsors are advisors throughout the preparation process. They should be involved in all the details and be a voice of encouragement and support.

Their obligations go through accompanying the bride and groom to the dress and suit fittings, helping to coordinate the courtship, the bridesmaids, the decoration, the party and even organizing the bachelor parties, among others. They can even be in charge of taking the bride and groom to church.

As you can see, groomsmen are not just any guest. They are the right hand of the bride and groom throughout the entire process. But how many sponsors do you need to do everything it takes?

Actually a wedding can have as many groomsmen as the couple considers necessary. The link is also not determined, it can be parents, siblings or best friends. Fundamentally, they must be close and trustworthy people for all the responsibility they have.

The godparents of the vigil

They are the most important of all and the only ones required. As the name says, they are in charge of watching over the bride and groom. They are also known as ‘Sacramental Godparents’, since they must sign the marriage certificate as witnesses.

These godparents must be married by the church, which will require your marriage certificate to prove it. The groomsmen of the vigil are standing next to the bride and groom at the beginning of the ceremony, often with a candle, as a symbol of their vigil.

Godparents of rings

They are in charge of delivering the rings to the bride and groom when the time comes. They can be two people, a man and a woman, or a single person.

Godparents of earnest

They are the ones who  pass the earnest money to the groom to hand over to the bride. It can also be a couple or a single person. When this ritual ends, the bride gives him the earnest again to keep while the marriage continues.

Godparents of tie

They are the ones who tie the tie that binds the bride and groom. In this case they have to be two people, although they do not have to have a link with each other. However, tradition says that if it is a loving couple, they will bring good luck to the new spouses.

Bouquet godmother

It is the person who holds the bouquet throughout the wedding ceremony. Those flowers are offered by the bride and groom to the virgin, and when the priest indicates it, the godmother approaches the bride and changes the bouquet. The normal thing is that it is a woman close friend of the bride, although it may be a relative.

Godparents of the Bible and rosary

During the wedding the priest also blesses a Bible and a rosary. Their godparents are in charge of keeping them throughout the ceremony, to give them to the bride and groom when that moment arrives and then take them back for the rest of the liturgy.

Godparents of cushions

They are less common than the previous ones, but when they are appointed, they have the task of placing, at the beginning of the wedding, the cushions on which the bride and groom will kneel before the altar.

The witnesses

In addition to the godparents you will need to have witnesses. There are church witnesses and civil witnesses. The former must attest to the parish of the relationship and behavior of the couple for the church to authorize the marriage. Civilians must sign the marriage contract of the spouses before a civil judge.

Normally, the bride and groom do not burden the groomsmen with the additional responsibility of being witnesses, although there is nothing written and it all depends on the personal choice they want to make.

As you can see, there are many things that happen when you get married, so it is advisable to have as many groomsmen as possible to help you. You also have to make sure they have their seats reserved in the front row, as they need to be around when they have to help you.
