How to have a healthy bedroom

Having a healthy bedroom can contribute to a good quality of sleep. A study published in  Sleep Health found a relationship between insomnia problems with discomfort in bed, exposure to noise and inadequate temperatures.

In addition, beyond this, the bedroom could be damaged by poor air quality, use of electronic devices, among others. What should you keep in mind?

1. A clean and ventilated space

Cleaning the home is essential, and we should do it, whenever possible, with natural products. Although we have become accustomed to the use of chemicals, the latter can be harmful to health, as detailed in a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health .

In particular, exposure to some chemicals in conventional cleaning products can cause respiratory and skin discomfort. In addition, according to this same publication, many of these agents are also associated with endocrine and reproductive problems.

On the other hand, beyond this, a healthy bedroom requires a more thorough hygiene if we want to achieve a peaceful and restful sleep. For the cleaning to be complete, we must bear in mind that mites reproduce more in humid and warmer environments.

  • This happens on sheets, duvets, curtains, stuffed animals, mattresses, cushions, or rugs.

To avoid them, we recommend ventilating the room every day, even letting the sun shine directly on the places where there may be mites. If we do not have a window or there is poor ventilation we can use a ceiling fan.

No electromagnetic pollution

It is a great mistake for our health to fill the bedroom with devices such as the computer, television or landline telephone. These emit electromagnetic waves that affect our nervous system and prevent a good rest,  as evidenced by research published in the Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy

Likewise, and according to this same publication, they could also influence the appearance of chronic diseases in the long run. We recommend avoiding these devices in the bedroom and placing them in the study or other rooms in the house.

If they are essential, we will disconnect them during sleep hours. Also with any wireless connection we have at home. On the other hand, we will avoid having plugs near the head. If we suffer from insomnia or we usually wake up tired, we must take this point into account.

Too many things?

Since it is the place for rest,  we should avoid filling the bedroom with things. The most abundant are usually furniture, paintings and photographs, books, dolls, work items, etc.

The most advisable thing is to try to be as minimalist as possible. The accumulation of objects influences the alteration of our mind, before and during sleep. On the contrary, as a post in Psychology Today suggests , minimalism brings us peace of mind and a good frame of mind.

We will try not to have things in view, but to keep them collected in boxes, in closets or under the bed. We can have some relaxing element in sight, such as a painting or a candle.

We can also choose a plant, but as long as it is suitable for the interior of a room. One of the most successful is poto or potus, not only because it is easy to care for but also because it is responsible for renewing the air in a natural way.

  • Increase libido: Ylang-ylang and vanilla.
  • Enhance romanticism: pink.
  • Clean an environment of negative emotions: rosemary.
  • Freshness: mint.
  • Give heat: ginger.
  • Promote joy: citrus aromas, especially orange.

These scents can be created from candles, incense, or essential oils. In the latter case, we must make sure that they are 100% natural, if possible, ecological, to guarantee that they have the positive effects that we have mentioned. Many stores sell essences, but they are artificial and only give a smell to the room.
