Did You Know The Pineberry Or White Soul? A Strawberry Flavored With Pineapple!

The “pineberry”, also known as “white strawberry” or “white soul” is a very curious exotic fruit.  It was rescued by a group of farmers when it was almost considered extinct.

Although by 2003 this strange variety of strawberries had almost disappeared, it was the timely action of the farmers that managed to prolong its existence until today, which is already out of danger.

In the world there are many exotic fruits that can be said to be “exclusive”, since they are usually difficult to grow and only occur once or twice a year. This is the case of pineberries, which in many parts of the world are not known for being so rare and for the fact that they are still in the process of recovery.

A little history…

A little history…

The white strawberry or “white soul”  tastes very similar to pineapple, but is actually a variety of strawberry. Historically it is said that they are originally from Chile , but in the year 1700 they were taken to France, from where they spread to other parts of the world.

Pineberry results from the crossing of two strawberry species ( Fragaria virginiana and Fragaria chiloensis ), both of American origin. It received the name Fragaria x ananassa to indicate its hybrid origin and its distinctive aroma of tropical pineapple ( ananassa ).

In ancient times they were marketed in Central and South America, where they could be grown more easily. But  the lack of interest in their planting and care caused the species to gradually disappear until it was almost extinct.

It did not disappear thanks to the fact that, in 2003, Dutch farmers decided to save the species. In addition, they re-introduced it in France for commercial and broadcast purposes.
